Bear Cubs Use Depth to Defeat LA Valley, 67–43

 ​This year's 3-day 6-team City College of San Francisco Golden Gate Classic features three teams from Los Angeles County (LA Valley, LA Southwest, and East LA) matched against three NorCal teams (Sierra, SRJC, and CCSF). The Bear Cubs (7-2) faced the Monarchs (3-8) of LA Valley College on the first day. Abby Tacla's pass from the top of the key to Elle Picard cutting to the left side of the hoop resulted in the first two points of the contest. Kaia Eubanks next hit a 3-footer after catching Picard's assist. Aliyah Muhammad swished a 3-pointer at the 7:43 mark. The Bear Cubs added six unanswered points on Tacla's cut and 1-footer off of Eubanks' assist, Picard's 3-pointer, and one free throw by Eubanks. Liliana Cornejo's 3-pointer with 2:25 on the clock, cut the Bear Cubs' lead to 10-6. The Bear Cubs finished the period with an 8-2 run comprised of Jordan Washington's steal below the Monarchs' free throw line and dribble-drive down the court for the layup, her 1-footer off of Tacla's assist, Shasta Vlasak's steal and layup, and two free throws by Hailey Webb for an 18-8 margin by the end of the quarter.

Leilani Richards started the scoring in the second quarter with a field goal for the Monarchs. Nineteen seconds later Jordan Washington sank a 12-footer after catching Elle Picard's baseline inbounds pass. By the halfway point of the period, the Monarchs had eight more points and the Bear Cubs seven on one free throw by Hattie Piper, Kaia Eubanks' 3-point-play on a drive, and Picard's 3-pointer, making their lead 27-18. The Bear Cubs then proceeded to stretch the advantage to 32-18 after Shasta Vlasak's 1-footer off of Picard's assist and Picard's 3-pointer, prompting the Monarchs to call a timeout. The Monarchs finished the quarter with a 3-pointer by Aliyah Muhammad and a field goal by Richards. The Bear Cubs tallied eight more points on two free throws by Abby Tacla, one by Washington, Washington's 3-point-play on a putback, and her 1-footer off of Hailey Webb's pass to widen the halftime lead to 40-23.

Jordan Washington took the Bear Cubs' first shot of the third quarter and sank the 3-footer over a defender. Aliyah Muhammad drew a shooting foul and made just the first free throw. Kaia Eubanks hit a 4-footer off of Elle Picard's assist at the 8:31 mark. Four minutes later Sydney Martin made one free throw. During the remainder of the period, the Monarchs scored five more points on Muhammad's 3-pointer and field goal. The Bear Cubs answered with nine points on Eubanks' 16-footer, Martin's putback, Washington' 18-footer, and Elle Picard 3-pointer for a 54-29 advantage.

Elle Picard passed down to Jordan Washington next to the basket for an open 1-footer to one minute into the fourth quarter. Gabriella Arellano and Aaliyah Serpas scored on consecutive drives past Bear Cubs. Madyson Carson found herself open at the high post and swished the 16-footer at the 5:52 mark. Arellano sank a field goal nearly two minutes later. With 2:51 on the clock, Sydney Martin drew a shooting foul and made both free throws. Serpas drained a 3-pointer, and then Hattie Piper made one free throw. Martin was back at the free throw line with 1:35 on the clock and again made both 1-point shots. Arellano completed a 3-point play 17 seconds after that. Piper answered with a 3-pointer. With 31 seconds to go, Anabel Arcilla was fouled and made one free throw. Serpas put in the last field goal to make the final score 67-43 in favor of the Bear Cubs. 

​The Bear Cubs had too much depth and height for their opponents to match up against. The Bear Cubs made 23 out of 54 (43%) of their shots, while the Monarchs made 17 out of 53(32%). The Bear Cubs only committed 11 fouls leading to 7 free throws by their opponents, of which they made 4. The Bear Cubs shot 26 free throws, making 16 of them (62%). Only Aliyah Muhammad reached double figures for the Monarchs with 14 points.

Jordan Washington led the Bear Cubs with her seventh double-double of 18 points and 12 rebounds. Elle Picard scored a season high 14 points, including four 3-pointers, and Kaia Eubanks scored 10. Sydney Martin added 7 points, Hattie Piper 5, Abby Tacla and Shasta Vlasak 4 each, Hailey Webb and Madyson Carson 2 each, and Anabel Arcilla 1. Kaia Eubanks was second in rebounding with 7. Elle Picard led in assists with 5.
