Matt Markovich begins his first year as Dean of Kinesiology, Athletics & Dance and Athletic Director for the Bear Cubs. He was formerly the Director of Kinesiology and Athletics at the College of Marin. His responsibilities there were oversight of the Kinesiology Department, Health Education, Adapted Physical Education, and Athletics.

During his tenure at the College of Marin, Markovich implemented the student-athlete academic service program (SAASP). The program incorporates academic services such as tutoring, study hall, and grade checks for student-athletes as well as a community service obligation for student-athletes. Markovich also started the College of Marin student-athlete hall of fame.

During the last four years, Markovich was also put in charge of student conduct and grievances for the district. Part of this responsibility was the implementation of the early alert and intervention program that is part of the student success initiative.

Markovich began his college education at Santa Rosa Junior College as a baseball student-athlete (playing for coach Ron Myers) and from there transferred to Sonoma State University, where he played baseball and earned his Bachelor's degree in Kinesiology. From Sonoma State University, Markovich moved to St. Mary's College of California, earning his M.A. in Health, Physical Education, and Recreation, in 1999.

Before turning to administration, Markovich had been a successful baseball coach, first as an assistant at the College of Marin. Then as the head assistant at his alma mater, Sonoma State. He then served as the head baseball coach at San Francisco State University for five years before moving on to Division 1, San Jose State University as an assistant coach in charge of hitting and catching.

Markovich is married to his wife Cara. They have three children Mia, Rubie, and McCovey. Markovich spends his free time with his family, working on his doctoral degree, and coaching his daughter's athletic teams.
