Women's Basketball: Bear Cubs open up Big 8 play with a win

            In their Big 8 Conference opener, the Bear Cubs (6-8) hosted the Pirates (1-10) of Modesto Junior College. Before the tip-off the Bear Cubs were assessed a technical foul due to the scorebook not being ready on time, and the Pirates made both free throws. Jenna Dunbar's 3-pointer at the 18:01 mark put the Bear Cubs on top 3-2. Alicia Mehtlan's 3-pointer with 15:25 on the clock stretched the lead to 6-2. The Pirates scored six unanswered points to go ahead 8-6 with 11:05 on the clock. Anne Studdert finally broke the scoreless streak with a basket at the 9:54 mark and another at the 7:37 mark. Niambi Saint Louis scored the Bear Cubs' final basket of the half with seven minutes still in the half. The Bear Cubs missed their next 12 shots and only added three free throws for a total of 15 points. The Pirates scored four points in the last 27 seconds of the half to go into the locker room with a 16-15 lead.

            Brittney Rachuy scored on the Bear Cubs second possession of the second half, but the Pirates answered with a two-footer. Following a single miss the Bear Cubs sank three field goals in a row to go out in front 23-20 after a little over four minutes of play. Vai Thompson's putback and Brooke Santander's 3-pointer lengthened their lead to 29-22. The Bear Cubs' defense made steals and forced turnovers. When Jenna Dunbar sank a 3-pointer with 5:13 remaining, the lead became 38-26. The Bear Cubs maintained the lead and went on to win 43-32.

            Again the Bear Cubs' defense dominated play, but their shooters struggled. In the first half the Bear Cubs made only 5 out of 35 shots (14%) and 3 out of 9 free throws (33%).  In the second half they got off to a good start making 9 out of their first 17 shots, but then made only 3 out of their final 16 shots for a total of 36% (12 out of 33).

            Jenna Dunbar led the scoring with 10 points, and Brooke Santander added 9 points. Anne Studdert and Vai Thompson each tallied 5 points, Brittney Rachuy 4, Alicia Mehtlan 3, Niambi Saint Louis, Taylor Graham, and Sarah Arteseros 2 each, and Amber Hart 1. Alicia Mehtlan was the top rebounder with 12 and also made 4 steals. Vai Thompson grabbed 8 rebounds and blocked 3 shots.
