SRJC Women's Track and Field 2016 Season Preview

The 2015 season was a rebuilding year for SRJC Women's Track and Field. Finishing 5th at conference, 11th in northern California and at the State Championships the team boasted its largest haul of medals in four years with four. "Though our team was small, we made a lot of progress," reports Head Coach David Wellman "we have a lot of returners and some big time freshmen that will be a big boost this season". The SRJC Women's Track Team will return the two women who medaled at the State Meet, Erica Ruiz and Julia Grimm, while adding a number of Freshmen who will bolster the already impressive team.

Athletes to watch this season:

Stephanie Fernandez (Montgomery High School) – During her Senior year, Fernandez had a breakout season. Posting fast marks in the 300m Hurdles (46.01), 100m Hurdles (16.86) and the 100m (13.04), Fernandez has the potential to be one of the top hurdlers in Northern California. The jump from the 300m Hurdles to the 400m Hurdles is always a tough one, but she is on track to do some big things in the longer race.

Julia Grimm (Vintage High School) – Earning three State Medals (High Jump, Javelin, and the Heptathlon) and scoring 16 out of the 17 points scored by the entire team at the State Meet, Grimm will try to advance last season's performance. Boasting PRs in the High Jump of 5'3", Javelin 136'4" and a Heptathlon score of 4214, Grimm has her eyes set on qualifying for another State Championship.

Devyn Ruiz (Healdsburg High School) – After graduating from Healdsburg, Ruiz spent her Freshmen year at Santa Monica College. Putting together a solid season with PRs in the Long Jump (17'7") and the Triple Jump (34'3"). Ruiz made her way back to Santa Rosa and will compete this year, looking to advance her marks in both jumps while also being a part of the 4x100m team.

Erica Ruiz (Rancho Cotate High School) – Now in her sophomore year, the three time all-conference award recipient is set up for another great season. In the 2015 Track season Ruiz ran a 4:45 1500m, earning the 8th place medal at the JC State Meet. Competing in the 5,000m and the 1500m, Ruiz will put together another great run towards the end of the season.

The Women's Track Team will get underway this Thursday with the 31st annual Chico Multi Classic where Sophomore Julia Grimm will compete in the Heptathlon. The rest of the team will compete on Saturday at the De Anza Open in Cupertino.
