SRJC women's swim & dive team finished 2nd overall in the very competitive Big 8 Conference last week at the championship meet hosted by Delta College.
With an extremely strong showing, the Cubs took 5 individual conference titles as well as two relays.
Freshman Taylor Sargis was named 2017 Big 8 Female Swimmer of the Year as a result of being the only athlete to sweep all three of her individual events including the 200 IM, 100 Breast, and the 200 Breast. Her time of 2:22.59 in the 200 Breast set a new Big 8 meet record, a Delta College pool record, and improved on the SRJC school record, which she had already broken earlier this season.
Freshman Hailey Vance also had a breakout meet taking the 100 Back title as well as finishing 2nd in both the 50 free and the 200 Back. Sophomore Jasmine Alger successfully defended her 2016 conference title in the 200 Fly winning it again this season in a time of 2:11.55 which set a new pool record and a SRJC school record. Alger also finished 3rd in the 100 Fly and 5th in the 400 IM.
The relay team of Vance, Lucia Mora, Sargis, and Annika Erickson combined to win both the 200 and 400 Medley relays on their way to helping SRJC qualify all 5 of their relays to the state meet.
Other highlight swims included Mora's 2nd place finishes in both of the Breaststrokes, Mary Lane's 2nd place finishes in both the 200 and 400 IM's, and Erickson's three top 8 finishes in the 200 IM, 100 Fly and 100 Free. Sophomore Jordan Jayne also posted a state qualifying time in the 200 Fly.
The SRJC divers Elana Candiotti and Lizzie Walls also had top 5 finishes, qualifying them to the state finals as well. Candiotti finished 3rd on both boards and Walls finished 5th on the 1m and 4th on the 3m.
The Cubs now advance to represent SRJC at the CCCAA State Swimming & Diving Championships, May 4-6, hosted by East LA College.
