Women's Basketball: Five Bear Cubs score in double figures, beat Modesto 89-43

             On Coaches vs. Cancer Night, the Bear Cubs (8-11, 4-6) hosted the Pirates (2-17, 0-10) of Modesto Junior College. Before the tipoff, Britta Irvine stepped to the free throw line and sank two technical foul shots due to the Modesto coach's failure to declare her starting lineup within the required timeframe. The Bear Cubs won the tipoff and Maiya Flores sank the first field goal of the game. The next time down Shayla Newman drew a shooting foul and made the second free throw. Twenty-seven seconds later Cammie Barsuglia drained a 3-pointer. The Pirates got on the scoreboard with a field goal at the 8:39 mark and added another nearly a minute and a half later to close the gap to 4-8. Beginning with Maiya Flores' 3-pointer with 6:31 on the clock, the Bear Cubs made five out of six shots, ending with DJ Hayes' 3-pointer, to jump out to a 20-10 lead. After missing their next four shots, the Bear Cubs ended the quarter by sinking five layups in a row on fast breaks after steals and Hayes' drive to extend their lead to 30-10 by the end of the period.

            Hayes took the Bear Cubs' first shot of the second quarter and drilled in the 3-pointer. The Pirates drew a shooting foul and made one of two free throws. Just five seconds later, Lizeth Zavala pushed the ball and dribbled around defenders to bank in the left-handed layup. During the next three minutes only three points were scored--all by the Bear Cubs--when Shayla Newman made one free throw and Lizeth Zavala made Lilly Orozco's steal pay off when she converted the fast break layup. Maiya Flores got the scoring going again with a layup at the 4:59 mark, followed by a Pirates' field goal twenty seconds later. Flores swished a 3-pointer, and Newman went to the free throw line and made both to put their lead at 45-15 with 3:37 on the clock. About a minute later the Pirates made their final field goal of the quarter. During the remainder of the period the Pirates added three out of four free throws, while Britta Irvine and Maiya Flores both sank a 3-pointer and Madeline Strom and Flores a field goal each, widening their advantage to 55-20 by halftime.

            The Pirates hit a shot from inside the key to register the first two points of the third quarter a little over a minute in. Shayla Newman went to the free throw line with 8:25 on the clock and made both. Britta Irvine sank a 10-footer, and the Pirates added two free throws. Shayla Newman successfully completed a post move near the hoop. The Pirates scored four points in a row on a field goal and two free throws. The Bear Cubs countered with Maiya Flores' 3-pointer and Cammie Barsuglia's 20-footer. Following one field goal and one free throw by the Pirates, Madeline Strom made a move in front of the basket and banked in the tough 3-footer with 3:01 left. The Pirates finished off the quarter with a pair of field goals, while DJ Hayes scored the final four points on a pair of free throws and a field goal to make the score 72-35.

            The Bear Cubs made their first two shots of the fourth quarter--Britta Irvine's 3-pointer and Shayla Newman's post move, making the score 77-37 after two minutes of play. Neither team scored again until Maiya Flores swished her fifth 3-pointer of the contest with 5:54 on the clock. Madeline Strom made two field goals in a row, the first from 12 feet and the second from 2 feet for an 84-39 lead. The Pirates added a pair of free throws with 3:14 left. Cammie Barsuglia put in a field goal with 1:52 remaining and the Pirates made their final basket 20 seconds after that. Lizeth Zavala drained a 3-pointer with 43 seconds to go to complete the scoring in the Bear Cubs' 89-43 win.

            The Bear Cubs made 21 out of 39 shots (54%) in the first half, nine of them layups. In the second half they put in 13 out of 32 (41%), with only one layup--DJ Hayes' steal and full-court drive. The Bear Cub defenders made it tough for the Pirates to score during most of the contest, as they made only 16 out of 55 shots (29%). The Bear Cubs scored a season-high 89 points, and the 46-point margin of victory is Bear Cubs' largest of the season.

            Five Bear Cubs scored in double figures. Maiya Flores, who made 5 field goals and 5 3-pointers ended up with 25 pts. DJ Hayes scored a season-high 12 points, and Shayla Newman also totaled 12 points. Britta Irvine and Madeline Strom both finished with 10 points each. Cammie Barsuglia added 9 points, Lizeth Zavala 7, and Jasmine Henderson 4. Guards Cammie Barsuglia and Lizeth Zavala led in rebounding with 7 each. Post player Shayla Newman was tops in assists with 5.
