Nearly two weeks after playing their last game, the Bear Cubs (3-3, 54.5 ppg) returned to action at the City College of San Francisco Golden Gate Classic against the Huskies of East Los Angeles College (9-3, 80.5 ppg). The Bear Cubs started by winning the battle for the loose ball on the tip-off and eventually Britta Irvine found Shayla Newman open as she rolled to the basket, then caught the pass, and banked in the 1-footer. The Huskies scored three field goals, two on put backs, before Maiya Flores swished a deep 3-pointer with 6:56 on the clock. Jaelynn Curley answered with her own 3-pointer, and the next time down the Huskies banked in another putback for an 11-5 lead. Back-to-back baskets by Shayla Newman and Maiya Flores made the score 9-11 at the 4:20 mark. Within 10 seconds Curley sank another 3-pointer. Newman then hit two shots in a row, the first from the high post and the second inside on a low post move, to close the gap to 13-14. The Huskies went on an 11-1 run, thanks in part to three consecutive 3-pointers by Curley, for a 25-14 lead with 1:18 left. Maddie Strom swished a 5-footer with 48 seconds remaining, and the Huskies made one more field goal to end the quarter ahead 27-16.
The Bear Cubs started the second quarter with the ball and Maiya Flores got open and drained a 3-pointer. Sixteen seconds later Curley dropped in her sixth 3-pointer. The Bear Cubs made their next three shots in a row—Flores' inside spin move, her 3-pointer, and Newman's low post move. Meanwhile the Huskies added Curley's seventh 3-pointer to put their lead at 33-26 with 7:14 on the clock. The Huskies again went on an 11-1 run until Maddie Strom's 8-footer with eight seconds left, making their halftime lead 44-29.
The Bear Cubs scored first in the third quarter when Maddie Strom was successful on an up-and-under low post move. The Huskies put in two baskets before Shayla Newman's midrange field goal at the 6:52 mark. About a minute later Maiya Flores grabbed a long defensive rebound, drove the ball down court, pulled up at the free throw line, and drained the shot, making the deficit 35-49. During the next four minutes Strom sank a short shot and Lizeth Zavala scored on a baseline drive, while the Huskies added three free throws and a field goal. In the final two minutes of the quarter the Huskies put in a 3-pointer and a free throw and Lizeth Zavala swished a 3-pointer to make the trailing margin 42-58 by the end of the period.
The Huskies scored the first 10 points of the fourth quarter before Lizeth Zavala's field goal with 6:18 on the clock. Maddie Strom's successful post move nearly two minutes later was followed by Flores' 3-pointer and then Zavala's to get to 52-71 with 3:30 left. The Bear Cubs didn't score again until DJ Hayes' fast break lay-up with 46 seconds remaining. The Huskies finished up by scoring two more field goals, the last with two seconds to go to punctuate their 75-54 victory.
The Huskies outrebounded the Bear Cubs 53-35, including 18 on the offensive side of which they putback 7. The Bear Cubs were not able to score off any of their 7 offensive rebounds. Jaelynn Curley, who made seven 3-pointers in the first half, only added two free throws in the second to finish with a game-high 23 points.
Four Bear Cubs scored in double figures with Maiya Flores leading the way with 19. Shayla Newman totaled 12 points, Maddie Strom 10 on 5 for 5 shooting, and Lizeth Zavala came off the bench to score a season-high 10 points. DJ Hayes added 2 points and Cammie Barsuglia one.
