Women's Basketball: Last road game, Bear Cubs get the win

             Friday the Bear Cubs (9-14, 5-8) made their final Big 8 road trip of the season to the home of the Hawks of Cosumnes River College (1-20, 1-12). The Bear Cubs won the tip and after Kylie Oden rebounded Britta Irvine's 3-point miss, she swished her own 3-pointer. On the Bear Cubs' next shot attempt, Jenny Eggers scored on a reverse layup. Two minutes later Eggers drew a shooting foul and made both free throws. Just 21 seconds afterward, Eggers completed a 3-point play for a 10-0 lead, prompting a Cosumnes River timeout with 5:41 on the clock. About a minute later Madeline Strom sank a turnaround, fall away 5-footer. The Hawks hit a 15-footer to get on the scoreboard and added two free throws on their next possession. Cammie Barsuglia sank a short shot with 1:33 left, and the Hawks scored five more points before DJ Hayes drained a 3-pointer at the buzzer for a 17-9 lead.

            Trina Shaner made a 3-pointer 90 seconds into the second quarter. Kylie Oden scored on a drive over a minute later. Two free throws and a scoring drive by Angel Bernardi at the 4:18 mark increased the lead to 23-14. During the remainder of the period, the Hawks made just two field goals. Meanwhile Madeline Strom hit a post shot, Britta Irvine and Gaby Roldan scored on drives, and Mireya Lopez sank two free throws to stretch their lead to 31-18 at the half.

            The Bear Cubs scored the first four points of the third quarter on a putback by Jenny Eggers and a drive by Destiny Grayer. The Hawks sank two free throws, and Kylie Oden and Madeline Strom each did the same. Shaner swished a 3-pointer, Kylie Oden dropped in a floater, Shaner sank another 3-pointer, and Oden scored on a fast break layup with 5:50 on the clock. Madeline Strom's inside shot on the next possession made the score 45-28. Brookelyn Larkin scored on two consecutive drives for the Hawks. In the last 1:26 of the quarter Cammie Barsuglia and DJ Hayes made back-to-back layups, and Mireya Lopez banked in a 1-footer. The Hawks hit a shot at the buzzer to make the Bear Cubs' lead 51-34.

            The Bear Cubs made their first four shots of the fourth quarter, beginning with Britta Irvine's from beyond the arc. Jenny Eggers' third field goal of the quarter dropped through the net with 6:12 on the clock to widen their margin to 64-38. The Hawks scored the next six points before Madeline Strom's low post basket with 3:16 left. The Hawks added a field goal and three free throws. Kylie Oden's scoring drive with 1:31 remaining accounted for the Bear Cubs' final two points. The Hawks made two free throws to complete the scoring in the Bear Cubs' 68-51 victory.

            The Hawks only had five players and they all scored, as Trina Shaner led the way with 21 points. None of them fouled out, although two had four fouls each. All 10 Bear Cubs scored and all 10 pulled down at least two rebounds. Jenny Eggers fouled out in the last two minutes of the game.

            Jenny Eggers spent more time on the bench in foul trouble than on the floor, but still led the Bear Cubs with 15 points and 8 rebounds. Kylie Oden tallied 13 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. Madeline Strom scored a season-high 10 points. Angel Bernardi added 6 points, Britta Irvine and DJ Hayes 5 each, Destiny Grayer, Mireya Lopez, and Cammie Barsuglia 4 each, and Gaby Roldan 2. Bernardi pulled down 7 rebounds and passed for 4 assists.
