Bear Cubs bounce back against Feather River

             In the second round of the San Jose City College Tournament, the Bear Cubs (4-8) were matched against the Golden Eagles (7-8) of Feather River College, who had lost in the first round to Diablo Valley College by a score of 60-84. The Golden Eagles scored first after 56 seconds of play. The Bear Cubs turned the ball over their first three times on offense, then missed their first five shot attempts, before Zaina Depina's 3-pointer got them on the scoreboard at the 7:22 mark. The Golden Eagles were the next to score by swishing a 3-pointer with 3:01 on the clock. Tiffany Salinas and Sadie Irvine hit consecutive field goals in the next 37 seconds, and Hayley Louzao hit a short shot a minute later to put the Bear Cubs ahead 8-5 with 1:14 left. The Golden Eagles made two field goals in 29 seconds. Destiny Grayer scored with 32 seconds left, then the Golden Eagles hit a 3-pointer nine seconds after that to hold a 12-11 lead at the end of the quarter.

            Ashley Hart sank the Bear Cubs' first shot of the second quarter, and Sadie Irvine made two free throws on their next trip down. The Golden Eagles put in a 3-pointer at the 6:56 mark to tie the score at 15, then added another 3-pointer and two field goals for a 22-15 lead. Four free throws by La Donna Saint Louis and four points by Zaina Depina on a field goal and two free throws cut the deficit to 23-26 with just under three minutes to go. After the Golden Eagles made one free throw, Sadie Irvine sank a 3-pointer, Hayley Louzao a field goal, and Irvine made two free throws and a field goal to take over the lead 32-27 with 22 seconds remaining. The Golden Eagles converted a layup just before the buzzer to cut the Bear Cubs' lead to 32-29 going into halftime.

            Irvine's driving layup started the scoring in the third quarter and she made another field goal a little over a minute later. The Golden Eagles made two free throws with 7:50 on the clock to make the score 31-36. Tiffany Salinas' drive, which ended with a spin shot at the 4:22 mark increased the lead to 40-34. Irvine's 3-pointer followed, but the Golden Eagles answered with their own 3-pointer. Jenny Eggers converted a 3-point play, then sank an outside shot, which was followed by Destiny Grayer's 3-pointer and Salinas' 3-footer for a 53-38 margin with 1:12 left. The Golden Eagles finished the quarter with six unanswered points to cut the Bear Cubs' lead to 53-44.

            Meme Nicolis scored the first points of the fourth quarter on a 10-footer. The Bear Cubs missed their next seven shots, but five points courtesy of two free throws by La Donna Saint Louis and three by Zaina Depina got their lead to 60-50 with 4:37 remaining. The Golden Eagles hit a shot, then Irvine made her third 3-pointer. A Golden Eagles' field goal with 3:18 left put the score at 63-54. After Irvine made two free throws and the opponents another field goal and one free throw, Zaina Depina completed a 3-point play with 1:02 on the clock for a 68-57 advantage. The Bear Cubs scored seven unanswered points on two free throws each by Depina and Hayley Louzao and Louzao's 3-point play with 9 seconds to go. The Golden Eagles banked in a layup with two seconds remaining to make the final score 75-59.

            Sadie Irvine recorded her first double-double of the season with a team-leading 24 points and 11 rebounds. Zaina Depina, who was able to use her speed to drive by multiple pressing defenders, finished 13 points, matching her season-high. Hayley Louzao scored a season-high 9 points and La Donna Saint Louis made all 8 of her free throws for 8 points. Tiffany Salinas totaled 6 points to go along with 9 rebounds. Destiny Grayer and Jenny Eggers each scored 5 points, Meme Nicolis and Ashley Hart 2 each, and Madison Barsuglia 1.
