Women's Basketball: Bear Cubs jump out to a big first half vs West Hills

             In the consolation round elimination game of the Caren Franci Invitational Tournament, the host Bear Cubs (1-5) faced the Eagles of West Hills-Lemoore College (4-6). Neither team could score to start the game until Zaina Depina finally swished a 3-pointer at the 6:24 mark. She scored a field goal the next time down the court and two minutes later hit her second 3-pointer for an 8-0 lead. La Donna Saint Louis scored on the Bear Cubs' next possession. The Eagles registered their first point on one of two free throws with just under three minutes left. The Eagles' first field goal came with two minutes left, making the score 3-11. La Donna Saint Louis accounted for the Bear Cubs' final four points of the quarter, and the Eagles scored on a drive just before the buzzer, to make the Bear Cubs' lead 15-5.

            Sadie Irvine scored eight points on two 3-pointers and a field goal in the first 3:24 of the second quarter to help widen the gap to 25-7. The Bear Cubs didn't score a field goal again until Jenny Eggers' basket with 1:54 on the clock, which made the score 28-11. La Donna Saint Louis completed a 3-point play, Jenny Eggers sank another field goal, and Angel Bernardi scored on a drive with three seconds left to go into halftime with a 35-16 lead.

            Zaina Depina and Sadie Irvine hit back-to-back 3-pointers to begin the third quarter. The Bear Cubs missed their next five shots before Hayley Louzao and Jenny Eggers scored consecutive field goals for a 47-22 lead with 4:08 remaining. The Eagles went on an 8-0 run before Tiffany Salinas made a successful drive to the hoop with 42 seconds on the clock. By the end of the period, the Bear Cubs were ahead 49-30.

            The Eagles scored a field goal first in the fourth quarter with 9:14 on the clock. On the Bear Cubs' next possession Jenny Eggers drew a shooting foul and made both free throws. Then their next time on offense, Jenny Eggers put up a shot near the basket under pressure. She made the sot and the and-one free throw for a 54-32 lead with 8:08 to play. Meme Nicolis scored the next two points of the game on an 8-foot shot with 5:45 to go. The Eagles added a field goal, two free throws, and a 3-pointer during the time when the Bear Cubs only score was a 2-footer by Tiffany Salinas with 4:27 left. The Eagles hit a 3-pointer and a field goal in the final minutes of the game, while Tiffany Salinas made one free throw, Hayley Louzao dropped in a 3-pointer, and Meme Nicolis a field goal.

The 64-41 win advances the Bear Cubs to the consolation final where they face Mendocino College. Mendocino overcame a 10-point deficit in the third quarter to defeat College of the Redwoods 61-59

Each of the Bear Cubs contributed with points, assists, rebounds, and/or steals. Sadie Irvine and Zaina Depina each made three 3-pointers and finished with 13 points. Jenny Eggers made four field goals and three free throws for 11 points. La Donna Saint Louis added 9 points, Hayley Louzao 6, Tiffany Salinas 5, Meme Nicolis 5, and Angel Bernardi 2. Tiffany Salinas led in rebounding with 6. Zaina Depina had 4 steals and Destiny Grayer 4 assists.
