In their third round game of the COS Tournament, the Bear Cubs had to take on the Ventura College Pirates, the defending State Champions. The Pirates started by sinking a 3-pointer, two field goals, another 3-pointer, and two free throws before the Bear Cubs could get on the scoreboard with two free throws by Brooke Santander at the 12:43 mark. When Niambi Saint Louis made the Bear Cubs' first field goal, after they had missed their first 10 shots, with 11:50 on the clock, they were behind 4-12. Brooke next scored for the Bear Cubs four minutes later when she converted a 3-point play, making the score 7-18. The Bear Cubs finished the half by making 6 out of their final 13 shots. The Pirates also made six more shots, but three of them were 3-pointers in addition to five free throws, to take a 38-22 lead into halftime.
The Pirates began the second half with the ball and quickly scored a field goal. Jenna Dunbar answered for the Bear Cubs by dropping in a 3-pointer. The Pirates scored two more field goals, then Jenna sank her second 3-ball, making the score 28-44. Two field goals by Brooke Santander made the score 32-55 with 11:18 on the clock. Then the Pirates went on a 14-4 run to increase their lead to 69-36 with five minutes left in the game. Sarah Arteseros hit a 3-pointer at the 4:26 mark, which ended up as their final basket, to put the score at 39-69. During the remainder of the game, the Pirates hit two 3-pointers and a free throw, while the Bear Cubs could only manage to score on four free throws by Brooke, to put the final score at 43-78.
For the second game in a row, the Bear Cubs couldn't seem to get comfortable at their end of the court. They made only 28% (15 out of 53) of their shots, including just 3 out of 21 from 3-point range (14%). The Pirates made 37% of their shots, but they took 17 more (26 out of 70). They were 11 for 33 (33%) on their 3-pointers. The Bear Cubs cut down on their turnover total from the previous game, but still committed 19.
Brooke Santander came off the bench and led the Bear Cubs in scoring with 17 points, including 7 out of 8 from the free throw line. Jenna Dunbar made both of her free throws, but was 2 for 13 from the field for 8 points. Amber Hart added 5 points, Niambi Saint Louis 4, Sarah Arteseros 3, and Vai Thompson, Alicia Mehtlan, and Brittney Rachuy each scored a single field goal. Vai Thompson came off the bench to lead the rebounding with 8.
The Bear Cubs have to cure their shooting woes quickly, as they host Southwestern Oregon in the opening round of their own Caren Franci Invitational Tournament beginning December 11.
