2013-2014 Season Highlights

  • 2nd Place Finish Big 8
  • Elite Eight Appearance
  • 21-11 Overall
  • 11-3 Big 8

The Bear Cubs (21-11, 11-3) completed a successful season, surpassing preseason expectations. They had an up and down November and December at five tournaments, going 1-2 at Merced College and 0-2 at City College of San Francisco, but took fifth place at College of the Sequoias (3-1), third in their own Caren Franci Invitational (2-1), and second at San Jose (2-1).

The Bear Cubs began Big 8 Conference play winning their first eight games and holding sole possession of first place. Then they lost two in a row on the road, to San Joaquin Delta and Sierra College, dropping them into a tie for first place with Delta. Only a one point loss, 64-65, to Diablo Valley College during the last week of the regular season prevented the Bear Cubs from sharing the conference title with the Mustangs.

The Big 8 Conference turned out to be the toughest in the state last year, evidenced by six of the teams earning spots in the 18-team NorCal Playoffs. Three of the four teams competing in the NorCal Finals were members of the Big 8:  San Joaquin Delta the no. 1 seed, SRJC the no. 3 seed, and Sierra College no. 4. San Joaquin Delta College (26-5, 12-2), who the Bear Cubs played three times and defeated twice, qualified for the State Championships as the no. 1 team from the north.

Sophomore Madison Sowards, who was second on the team in scoring with 12.3 points per game, tied the school record for 3-pointers in a single season with 56.

Freshman Gretchen Harrigan, who led the state in scoring with an average of 25.2 points per game, was selected MVP of the Big 8 and First Team All-State. Gretchen set a single-game school record with 51 points at Diablo Valley College. Her 25.2 ppg average also sets a single-season school record, topping the previous record of 20.7 ppg. Her 8.4 rebounds per game puts her at no. 17 in the record book and her 20 rebounds against College of the Canyons ties her for no. 16 in the single game list.

Sophomore Stephanie Sack was selected All Conference and Third Team All State after leading the Big 8 and ending up sixth in the state in assists with 5.81 per game. This total sets a new school record, which had been 4.84. Stephanie set a single game school record for assists with 15 at Diablo Valley College, with Gretchen being on the receiving end of most of those passes. Her 186 assists this year combined with the 120 from last season gives her a career average of 4.64 to set a new school record for career assists.

Co-captains Erin Skinner and Stephanie Sack earned Academic All-Conference honors.

2014-2015 Season Preview

In her 10th season as head coach, Lacey Campbell is looking for another strong showing from local players competing in the tough Big 8 Conference. The Bear Cubs have finished in the top three in the Big 8 the last 6 years, winning it four times. The Bear Cubs only return one starter in Alicia Mehtlan (Willits), but will return key players from last year's team including, Brittney Rachuy (Sonoma), Amber Hart (Middletown), Sarah Artesaros (Piner) and Ali Romano (Sonoma). These sophomores will be leading a talented freshman group including Sadie Irvine (Justin Sienna), Via Thompson (Maria Carrillo) and Ashley Hart (Middletown). Transfer Jenna Dunbar (Mission Prep) will be looking to contribute right away. With a tough preseason and even tougher league the Bear Cubs will be looking to compete with state wide competition.

Program History

  • 2011 CCCAA State Championship Title

In March of 2011, the SRJC Women's Basketball Team, led by head coach Lacey Campbell, won the CCCAA State Championship by defeating City College of San Francisco. The Bear Cubs started the year with a 5-4 record going into the Christmas break; after that point, Santa Rosa won 21 of their last 23 games. The Bear Cubs, in SRJC's first State Final since the 1988 team won it all, became the first non-no. 1 seed from the north to win the State Championship. That year only four teams qualified for the State Tournament—two teams from the north and two teams from the south. In the first round, the Bear Cubs, who were seeded no. 2 in the north and ranked no. 10 in the state with an overall record of 26-6, upset the no. 1 seed from the south, Mt. San Antonio College, 56-55. All season long the Bear Cubs won games because of their stingy team defense. In the championship game, the Bear Cubs' defensive pressure kept the San Francisco offense, which had come into the game averaging over 75 points per game, off balance. The Bear Cubs held a 26-23 lead at the half. In the second half, the Bear Cubs built up an eight point lead and held on for a 52-45 victory—the lowest scoring final game in tournament history. Sophomore point guard Mia Greco scored 16 points and was selected MVP of the Tournament. Freshmen teammates Jen Tsurumoto, who scored 12 points against CCSF and 20 against Mt. SAC, and top rebounder Ashley Morgan, were selected to the All-Tournament Team. Coach Lacey Campbell was named Coach of the Year from the North.
