Adam Gockel won the NorCal Decathlon Championships this week by outperforming a field of 11 competitors and finishing with 6655 points. Despite the wind and rain on day-one, Adam took 1st place in the 400-meters (51.20), 1st in the Long Jump (22'7"), and tied for 1st in the 100-meter dash (11.33). To round out the first day of competition, Adam took 3rd place in the High Jump (5'8") and Shot Put (37'0") and ends the day with 3,464 points.

With a strong first-day behind him, Gockel began day-two with the 110 High Hurdles and finished 3rd with a time of 16.06 seconds. His 2nd place finish in the Discus Throw (113'8") kept Adam in running for the overall win. The competition heated up late into the second day with a 3-way battle in the Pole Vault between Gockel of Santa Rosa, Napolitano of Hartnell and Wilson of Fresno City. The battle ended in a 3-way tie for 1st place at 14'7". Adam used the momentum from the Pole Vault and took 1st place in the Javelin Throw (167'5") thirty minutes later.

After two-days of wind, rain and great competition, Gockel took home the championship late in the afternoon with a 2nd place finish in the 1500-meters (4:58.80).

It was two days of great performances by all of the competitors and you could see the camaraderie among them. However, Adam Gockel fought his way to the top of the podium.

Congratulations to Bear Cub Adam Gockel, NorCal Decathlon Champion, 2016-17. Adam has qualified for the State Meet being held at American River College in Sacramento on May 19-20. He is Ranked #1 in the State and #4 in the Nation for Junior Colleges.

Good luck at state Adam!
