College football: CCSF holds off SRJC 26-16

City College of San Francisco, the top-ranked team in Northern California, snapped a halftime tie by scoring 10 unanswered points after intermission to defeat host Santa Rosa JC, 26-16, in a Bay 6 Conference football game Saturday night.

It wasn’t that the Bear Cubs didn’t have chances to score in the second half. Twice they had the ball at CCSF’s 2-yard line and failed to put a point on the scoreboard.

“Frustrating,” Bear Cubs head coach Lenny Wagner said. “We haven’t been good in the red zone the past weeks. We had our opportunities. Still, the guys played hard and showed guts.”

The Rams, ranked No. 3 in the state, racked up 558 yards of offense compared to 300 for SRJC, which is ranked No. 9 in the state.

The visitors outgained the home team through the air (302 yards to 177) and on the ground (256 to 123).

San Francisco was penalized 18 times for 324 yards. Santa Rosa had 13 infractions walked off against them.

On the advice of the San Francisco coaching staff, the visitors didn’t shake hands with their opponent after the game. Instead, they hustled off the field.

“Their coach said he was afraid of a fight and so he told his players to leave the field at the end of the game,” Wagner said. “I thought that was totally wrong. The coaching staff should be able to control their players.”

Bear Cubs quarterback Vince Jefferies completed 14 of 40 passes and threw three interceptions. His favorite target was Kerr Johnson, Jr. (5 catches for 133 yards). Jordan Jackson hauled in four balls for 82 yards.

Jefferies was his team’s leading rusher with 86 yards on 16 carries. Ja’Narrick James picked up 36 yards on 14 touches.
