Andre R. Davis (b. Nov. 30, 1993) is an athletic wide receiver who was a member of the 2014 recruiting class, but enrolled at Kansas State in January. He will look to become a contributor both on offense and in the return game.
He had a slow spring debut, catching just one pass for 6 yards for the White team and returning a kickoff for 23 yards, but all indications are that he now is running with the top five receivers and could push for a starting spot.
Davis played two seasons at Santa Rosa Junior College, including the final year under head coach Lenny Wagner.
He was ranked as the nation's fifth-best junior college wide receiver by ESPN. Taking a year off probably is why he didn't muster more recruiting attention, as his coach explained to GoPowercat.com last December:
"Andre played for us in 2011 and had to stay home for some financial reasons during the 2012 season," Wagner said. "He is back here now playing for his second year in 2013. He will be a two-to-play-two guy."
Davis was named an All-Nor-Cal Conference performer in 2013 after hauling in 41 receptions for 841 yards and five touchdowns, while rushing seven times for 27 yards and another touchdown. He also returned 28 kickoffs for a 21.1-yard average with a 98-yard touchdown, and eight punts for a 6.4-yard average and a 58-yard touchdown.
He had a solid freshman JUCO campaign, too, catching 32 passes for 312 yards and two touchdowns, as well as returning 14 punts for an 11.0-yard average and 11 kickoffs for a 16.2-yard average.
Davis prepped at Dunbar High School under head coach Lawrence Smith, helping his team to earn a 13-1 record as a senior and win a Maryland Class 1A State Championship. You can watch all of his highlights here.
From the sounds of it, he always was destined to wear purple:
"I got back to school after the visit," the 6-foot-1, 180-pound Davis said.
"I thought about it and talked to my coach. I just knew it was what I wanted. It was just what I thought it was going to be. I've been wearing purple since Pop Warner league. My first high school was purple. And my mom's favorite color is purple. It is just the perfect spot for me."
