Empire notes: SRJC women finish 13th at state cross country championships

The Santa Rosa Junior College women's cross country team placed 13th and Jonny Vargas led the men's team with a 34th-place finish in the 2018 CCCAA state cross country championships held Saturday at Fresno's Woodward Park.

The women's team was led by Ana Palafox, who finished in 16th place with a time of 18 minutes, 54 seconds over the 3.1-mile course. Evelyn Ramirez (80th, 20:41), Jackie Ramirez (84th, 20:45), Marisa McGettigan (125th, 22:05), Dana Johnson (147th, 23:19) and Miranda Huntsinger (148th, 23:19) rounded out the Bear Cubs' team effort.

Vargas, running the 4-mile men's course, finished at 21:15, while Patrick Lynch finished 97th in 22:10.

Mt. San Antonio College took the men's title with an average time of 20:42, while L.A. Harbor took the women's title with an average time of 18:54.

Sonoma Stack holding softball tryouts

The 2019 Sonoma Stack Softball 18U spring tryouts will be held on Sunday, Nov. 25 and Sunday, Dec. 2 at the Sonoma Valley High School varsity field at 11 a.m.

Sonoma Stack places a focus on academics as well as athletics so that each player can continue to play collegiate softball and focus on a degree.
